I have listed some frequently asked questions below but please contact me if there is anything else you wish to know.
Frequently asked questions
What should I expect during my first appointment?
For some it can feel rather daunting but generally people's concerns are fully allayed within the session. I will do a pre-treatment assessment to discover any health issues or allergies to help me devise a safe and appropriate treatment for you.
Do I have to be completely undressed?
You only undress to the level you feel comfortable with. For a full body massage most prefer to completely undress but I can work around it if you choose to remain partially clothed.
What if I get an erection?
This is a very common concern and sadly keeps many men from receiving massage. Touch administered to any part of the body can activate the parasympathetic nervous system which can result in a partial or full erection. There is no need to feel embarrassed but if the fear of becoming aroused prevents you from fully relaxing it is fine to wear tight fitting underwear during the massage.
How will I feel after a massage?
It varies from person to person but most feel very relaxed and calm afterwards. Many feel relief from long term aches and pains while for some, a feeling of heaviness can last a day or two as the body continues its cleanse after the massage. This is followed by feelings of lightness and clarity that can last for several days blanketing us from the bustle and noise of modern living.
Can I talk during a massage?
Of course. Some like to give feedback as I'm working which enables me to adjust things like pressure or hone in on a particular area. I have had regulars who like to chat with me throughout, while most prefer to slip quietly into that peaceful place between wakefulness and sleep.
Do you play music during a massage?
It is entirely up to the client but most choose to have music playing in the background as it can help with the process of relaxing. I have put together some interesting playlists of music that are suitable for massage but if there is something you would like to bring to listen to during a session please do.
How often should I have a massage?
We will discuss this during your appointment as it will depend on your needs. If you are looking for relaxation, for instance, then once every 3 to 6 weeks should suffice. But if you have a particular issue you are working through or have a recovering injury or require maintenance and muscle conditioning as you train for instance, then I would probably recommend regular sessions weekly or fortnightly.
Is massage painful?
Massage is not generally painful but some of the deep tissue work can be a little intense especially if we are focusing on tight, sore areas. I will always check in with you and ask you to say if it starts to become uncomfortable. It should always feel like an 'ok pain' as anything that isn't can indicate an injury and I would need to adjust my pressure accordingly. Pain can also cause you to tighten up and negate the relaxing effects of the massage. The most effective massage always works with your body's natural response, not against it.
Do I have to cover myself with a towel?
I provide freshly laundered towels that offer warmth and privacy for the duration of the treatment. Only the areas I will be working on will be exposed. However, while it is standard practice for people to be covered or 'draped' during a massage, I have had many clients who have a preference for none. I am happy to accommodate either.
What happens after the massage?
The mind and body have usually slowed down and it is important not to rush afterwards. I leave the room to give clients time to rest or sleep a little before bringing them a glass of water. There is also time for any questions from clients, and aftercare advice and suggestions from myself if appropriate.
